Once you get to the top and see the beautiful view of the rooftops of Rome you will forget that you are in what was once a prison, mausoleum and hiding place for popes fleeing the Vatican. Castel Sant’Angelo is one of the greatest monuments of Rome and it is located very near the Vatican. Succeeding emperors were buried in the mausoleum for the next several decades, with Emperor Caracalla as the last in 217. Roman Emperor Hadrian originally commissioned Castel Sant’Angelo on the banks of the Tiber River to be a large-scale mausoleum for his family. The burial mound was originally topped with a garden and a golden statue of Hadrian with a four-horse chariot known as a quadriga, but today the fortress features a statue of the archangel Michael. There is a secret (though it is no secret now) passageway that connects Castel Sant’Angelo to the Vatican. The military use ended in 1901, when the castle’s restoration was begun. That was just the start.

It stands on the right bank of the Tiber River and guards the Ponte Sant’Angelo, one of the principal ancient Roman bridges. The construction dates back to the ancient Rome and precisely to 123 AD, when Hadrian had this impressive tomb built for himself and his family. But they were wrong.

But more about that later.

Though it is not of the same interest as most museums in Rome it is still worth a visit but it is the building itself that is the main attraction. Castel Sant’Angelo was built as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian (AD 130-139).

In 590 Pope Gregory the Great, conducting a penitential procession to pray for the end of a plague, had a vision of the archangel Michael sheathing his sword over the castle, signifying the end of the plague; from that incident came the structure’s modern name and the marble statue of the archangel that surmounts the building.
