Guatemala is a beautiful Central American country rich in diversity and nature. Although it is a small country, it has 22 different indigenous groups with its own language each, cloths, food and a lot to offer, although Spanish is the main language spoken here.
This country also has a big problem: there are communities where poverty is a lifestyle. 52.8% of the total population of the country lives under these parameters (earning 2 or 1 dollars a day). And 35.3% of them live in the rural areas, this means communities of Guatemala.

There are many organizations in this country. In 1987 SHARE began to work and implementing development programs in Guatemala with one premise: Share. And later on, SHARE Tours was created as a way of giving people around the world the opportunity to help, develop different projects that make an impact in communities and travel to Guatemala.

So why traveling to Guatemala and make a change in a community with SHARE Tours?

First you have to like helping, most rural and poor communities in Guatemala have conditions that are noT 5 star hotel, and also you must be aware of the language changes. The other important thing you have to like to do is sharing; with the projects promoted by the organization you will get unforgettable experiences and memories that will last forever.

SHARE Tours allows you to participate in projects of schools improvement like painting the classrooms, hand washing stations, tutoring children on language, art and science. If you like to work and you have farming skills, you can do it with the communities and help them grow vegetables or the product that they cultivate. This will allow you to have a cultural exchange having a more rich experience by living with the local families in the community.

Or you can develop sustainable projects to improve the lifestyle of the community; this means creating ways of helping the locals have better incomes with the available resources. If you have a business and are interested in getting workforce or product exchange, you can do it.

SHARE develops different projects in 7 provinces of Guatemala:

  • Guatemala (Capital City)

  • Sacatepéquez

  • Jutiapa

  • Alta Verapaz

  • Baja Verapaz

  • Chimaltenango

  • Huehuetenango

  • Quiché.

You can also visit SHARE Tours and find out more about the work we do.

As you can see, these provinces are located in the center and north of Guatemala, considered the most affected parts by poorness in the country. Although Guatemala is the capital city, many people live in poverty here.

Not everything is hard work; you can also travel through the country getting to see the amazing ancient Mayan cities like Tikal, go to a river and a lake in Izabal and Río Dulce (Sweet River), see one of the most beautiful lakes in the world in Atitlán; visit a colonial town in Antigua Guatemala. Also visit an ancient indigenous city called Iximche, Hike volcanoes like Agua (Water), Fuego (Fire) and Tolimán, and definitely enjoy the amazing landscapes this country has.

Above we listed just a few places you can visit during your travel to Guatemala, but you can also try the different dishes that each region has and the amazing flavors they combine. Learning the slang and words is another thing you can do here, once you learn them you will feel very chapín and have a cultural richness that is not only funny but will make you an expert in Guatemalan slang.
